Vinyl Pusher is the first compilation to see release from the new label Vinyl Pusher Records. This double-disc album is wonderfully pieced together by two of the Australia’s finest house talents, Firefox and Boogs.
Firefox, real names Andy J and Darren Glen, are two of Australia’s most prolific DJ/producers who have had club hits under numerous aliases worldwide. They topped the UK club charts twice under the names Blackout for Gotta Have Hope and Sgt. Slick for the timeless White Treble Black Bass, with those tracks being released on Multiply, Sony Germany, Neo and Blanco Y Negro amongst other labels. Most recently they held residencies nationwide under the supremely popular guise of Smash n Grab. Their latest incarnation is Firefox and they’ve announced their entrance to the clubbing kingdom with their club smash hit Sex Shooter.
Their set is a solid representation of the club music at the moment and the pair certainly have their finger on the pulse of what is destroying dance floors nationwide. Following the introduction, club land favourite Get on Da Move kicks things off nicely before flowing into the big room vocal house number Nobody by Michelle Weeks. While big room vocal house is strongly represented with Everybody, Speed Up, Meaning of Life and Deeper Love, it’s the electro that comes through prominently on this first disc and peaks with their own Sex Shooter.
While the vocal house is prominent, it’s the electrifying electro that forms the guts of this set. Creeps, Pull My Trigger, and Tonight Alright form the early backbone of the electro tinge to the album, with the uber groovy Slumber Party Massacre definitely making for one of the highlights of the disc.
The peak of the selection is definitely through the middle, with the trio of tracks 10-12 the pick. This Machine and I Need You are fine pieces of production that lead in brilliantly to the best track of the set Memory Cell; a four way collaboration courtesy of Amo, Navas, D-Nox & Beckers.
Getting towards the end of the set there’s room for a few more starry moments with Gypsy Women by Chic Flowerz a personal highlight. Mason, the artist responsible for one of the biggest tracks on the planet in 2006 by the name of Exceeder, features with his latest offering as the penultimate track in the set Follow Me. While it doesn’t have the some explosive impact as Exceeder, it’s certainly still in the right pedigree as far as production goes.
Moving onto the second disc and Boogs opens brilliantly with the tasty Justin Martin production Water. Early into the set the electro influence is once again prominent with Stabbing Sally by Marcella an early highlight. Following that is the latest offering from Spank Rock called Bump, which is an absolute weapon. One of the more enjoyable tracks I’ve heard for sometime.
Scanning For Viruses, Unknown and POF 807 are par for the course but it’s M.I.A.s’ latest Sunshowers that stands out from the crowd. A brilliant live vocal electro house production. Following this is Din Da Da by Solid Groove & Sinden, which is easily the highlight of the album. An electro weapon this has been heard many a time by many a DJ at many a festival, a dance floor destroying crowd pleaser. Paul Woodfords’ Erotic Discourse is yet another Switch favourite that features in this set and by now the disc is in fifth gear, taking no prisoners in its electro pursuit of dance music happiness.
It’s not all big room anthems as Some Polyphony, This is Sick and Blow represent some of the more deeper, driving numbers on the disc. This is Sick is another Solid Groove production and is a true representation of the ilk of producers that they are. The penultimate track, Around the World by Nicky Van She & Dangerous Dan features the Love’s Too Much acappella by Shapemod. Personally being a massive fan of Daft Punk’s eternal classic Around the World, this is a sure fire hit for me and a slamming way to begin closure for this album. The album finishes with a cherry on top with the classy production 37 Degrees by Oliver Huntemann. Lucky enough to catch this guy at Future Music Festival, this brings flooding back some great memories from a timeless performance by the German producer and DJ.
In summary, Vinyl Pusher is a brilliant reflection of the electro house club scene here in Australia. Disc One is masterfully pieced together by two of Australia’s finest club DJs and producers while on Disc Two, Boogs has managed to near upstage his more esteemed colleagues with a slamming selection of upfront electro house that is programmed and mixed to near perfection. Vinyl Pusher is a worthy investment for the electro house lovers the nation over.
