Side A: Do It Again (Oliver Huntemann remix) 7.04
Side B: Do It Again (Audion’s House Arrest mix) 9.32
While I have to confess that I found ‘Do It Again’, the first single to be taken from the Chemical Brothers’ newly-released sixth studio album ‘We Are The Night’ slightly on the underwhelming side upon initial listening, it proved to be one of those tracks that slowly works its way into your subconscious, and makes a new and arguably ‘proper’ sort of sense when heard through a huge system. This swift remix companion 12” sees the Brothers drawing upon the skills of two of this year’s most in-demand remixers; in this case Oliver Huntemann and Matthew ‘Audion’ Dear, for two divergent reworkings that take the original in considerably different directions.
On the A-side of this 12”, Oliver Huntemann’s reworking takes the original album version out on a dark, streamlined electro-house trajectory that’s reminiscent of Black Strobe (indeed, you can see why Huntemann was recently chosen to remix that act’s ‘Shining Bright Star’ single), extending the original’s vocal hooks out over a brooding backdrop of pneumatic hi-hats, sinister bass pads and spectral wooshes, creating an atmosphere that casts the repeated ‘do it again’ background sample in a considerably creepier setting. While Huntemann’s reworking is probably the mix here that most DJs will reach for with ‘big room’ play in mind, for his ‘House Arrest’ mix, Matthew Dear offers up an expansive nine minute long reworking that’s surprisingly less buzzing and cyborg-y than much of his other recent Audion material, instead opting for a gliding deep tech-house excursion that reduces the original vocal hooks to a mere stuttering rhythmic pulse as stripped-back snares play around rippling arpeggios and soft-focus Detroit-tinged synth pads. It’s extremely immersive, affecting stuff that for some reason feels closer in kin to Dear’s more subdued work under his own name such as ‘Leave Luck To Heaven’, and by no means the weaker half of this excellent 12” remix set.
