Following on from her well received album Hypnotized in 2005, Colette is back with Push, a super sweet outing in house and pop. With the help of various producers, Colette brings us a collection of 11 individual tracks (plus a couple of cheeky remixes), including the singles About Us, If and Funny.
The album kicks off with the incredibly poppy About Us, with the fairly generic beats supporting an incredibly catchy vocal line. Even though I didn’t particularly like this track, the hook was stuck in my head for a couple of days. Very effective in a pop-by-numbers kind of way. The second single to be lifted from the album, If is a little better and evoked visions of Kylie (which may or may not be a good thing). One of my preferred tracks on the album is the collaboration with Om (hip hop) stable mate Black Spade, as the edgier broken beats are a well appreciated respite after the unimaginative grooves found elsewhere on the disc.
The Chi styles are rockin’ on Get You Over courtesy of production team Home & Garden, and the nice dixie-based sample is lots of fun. Good stuff. An example of pop being done right is Runnin Round, nice solid beats and cut up vocals work well together. The downtempo Touch & Go Interlude is excellent, although characteristically all too short, it would be nice to see Colette explore this direction as her softy sweet voice is perfectly suited for this tempo music. The Chuck Love remix of About Us is a slight improvement on the original with a bit more squelch added, but it still comes out sounding like a typical pop/dance remix.
I was a bit disappointed by this album, expecting to hear a bit more Chi styles as per Colette’s DJing efforts; instead I was presented with a sugary sweet platter of pop which really didn’t satisfy my hunger. Heck, even the hot pink art work leaves you with a toothache! Commercial fans will get a kick out of this, but for those who like a bit more substance look elsewhere for your sustenance.
