Stéphane Pompougnac is back with the tenth edition of the very classy Hotel Côstes series. Blending a unique collection of downbeat, folky grooves and left of centre electronica, Pompougnac’s mixes are always a delight and this is no exception. He certainly has been busy of late with his own artists album Hello Mademoiselle being released recently on Pschent.
Starting things of in a jingoistic vibe is brother and sister duo Angus & Julia Stone’s Paper Aeroplane, this soft folky melody getting good airplay in Australia when released and apparently reaching farther across the globe than I would have expected. Keeping in the folky vibe things we drift into the Haaksman & Haaksman remix of $olal’s Psycho Girls and Psycow Boys, Haaksman giving it a nice dash of electronica. Groovy stuff. The bluesy guitar of Dephazz’s Society are up next, very smoky sultry music with a touch of bluegrass harmonica to get you moving those hips. One of my favourite tracks from Hello Mademoiselle, Sunday Drive is on here in its remix form. The Charles Schillings vocals are excellent.
After a traipse through Denmark with the likes of Peder & Anne Trolle’s White Lilies and DJ Disse’s Taxi To War, we are hit up with the classic crooning of Louie Austen in Glamour Girl. Quirky electronica with amazing vocal talent is always going to be a winner. Good to see Louie going strong after more than 60 years of walking this earth. The haunting piano of Orsten’s Fleur Blanche are strangely familiar but I can’t pick them, still very cool track. We close out with Dutchman Benny Sings’ Coconut, not as much fun as his other work but his unique voice still makes me smile.
This mix was a little but more subdued than past Costes mixes, a huge variety of music is on here but it failed to get me feeling too excited, it is perfect music for watching the clouds with a glass of wine though.
In a word: Dreamy
