Super Mal feat. Luciana - Bigger Than Big

Remember the song ‘Yeah Yeah’ by Bodyrox? Maybe not, but what you do remember is the remix that D Ramirez did, with vocals later added by Luciana. Well, Luciana and her haunting – yet endearing – voice is back, this time with Super Mal and on the tune ‘Bigger Than Big’. And, thankfully, we have a winner.
The track is a nice slice of funky house, with some excellent keyboard action and a retro synth bass. It manages to swing and bounce like a fat kid on a see-saw (sorry… to any fat kids reading). Instantly, the song had me shaking my head and humming the vocals, then even later attempting to sing them myself. Although the song is very funky, it’s not funky house as we know it. The instrumental is a brilliant piece of musicianship that could stand up by itself, and the vocal is a mixture of shouting and singing, which has the strange attraction of making you want to hear it more.
The Micky Slim mix is a standout, offering a very quirky and swinging electro house sound with a cheeky and fun vibe. The Lifelike remix is not too different from the original, but adds something (I just can’t figure out what). It makes the smile on my dial that much bigger. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s by Lifelike, who was responsibly for ‘Discopolis’, and the fact that he’s French? It has that a disco, big room, French sound which is coveted by many. This is my favourite version, even more so than the original. The Jupiter Ace remix is essentially the original, with more housey drums. As for the rest, they’re not bad, but not not different enough or better/worse than the original.
I’m in love, however mostly with the Lifelike remix. This is now in my top 10.
