As soon as the tune opens, you know that this must involve the work of Tonite Only, although in this case it’s Sam La More of the now defunct duo. The super sharp and clear drum sounds, coupled with a bass that just oozes class, makes it very obvious who is behind the boards. But, when the vocals begins, it dawns that this is not an original song, but rather a remix of the excellent ‘Need In Me’ by Gus Gus.
First up we have the Goodwill and Sam La More remix, which just drips with that Tonite Only vibe. Coupled with retro synths and strings, it’s a throwback to the 80s like nothing else. This song is clearly geared for the dancefloor and all the kiddies will love it, and even the older crowd too I’d imagine. The vocal ensures the ladies will also be grooving along all night.
The Micky Monza and Joseph Disco remix is a lot less polished, sounding dirty and edgy, like it was made in a garage. This is not to say it lacks production values – au contraire – it’s just a different sound, a bit less mainstream tipping its hat a little to the underground. Even the vocal is comparatively dry, lacking some of the lush reverb present in the other mixes.
Audiofly are a very cool act producing some very excellent minimal and tech house, but getting them to remix ‘Need In Me’ seems like an attempt at appealing to a completely different crowd, as it has no real musical merit. As a tracks, it’s not bad at all, but as a remix it’s pointless. The Thor remix is not bad, a very chunky breaks remix. The vocal doesn’t really work though, and once again you’re left wanting the original.
Overall – and you can hate me for it – but the Goodwill and Sam La More remix is by far the best of the bunch. It may not be as ‘cool’ as some of the others, but it is the one that makes me wanna get up and dance. Bring on summer!
