Since 2002’s Manipulating Agent, an album that won ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Producer’ at the 2002 DMAs, the Sydney-based producer/label owner has been relatively quiet on the production front. Spring of 2007 has seen him deliver the long-awaited follow-up What’s Happening, and Say What You Feel is the second single off that album.
Featuring the vocal talents of New York soulstress Stephanie McKay, it’s a soul joint with a liberal dose of hip-hop. McKay’s vocals are honey-smooth and glide effortlessly over the horn-laden chorus as she exhorts the listener to “Be who you are and say what you feel”. The judicious use of cuts make give the track a modern soul flavour, while at the same time the elegant drumming and keys could be straight out of the 70s.
The Blue Guerilla Mix is a much more hip-hop type of deal. Stripping away much of the instrumentation of the original and adding the organ line from Jurassic 5’s What’s Golden, it’s a much more rugged sounding track.
Non-Stop sees RuCL joined by the incomparable freestyle king Supernatural. The dancehall stylings of RuCL works surprisingly well with the almost whispered rapping of Supernatural, but unfortunately this track doesn’t capture the magic of Katalyst and RuCL’s best track to date, Let the Music Talk. Supernatural’s flow is without the doubt the highlight of this track, although Katalyst delivers a more than acceptable beat.
If this single is anything to go by, What’s Happening will live up to the expectations created by Katalyst’s previous offerings. Having been announced as part of the line-up for Good Vibrations festival, and with a national tour throughout November, you’ll no doubt get plenty of chances to hear him over the next few months.
