Michael Reinboth returns for number eleven in the excellent Future Sounds of Jazz series. So what is the future sound of jazz? Here mainstay of the Nordic nu jazz scene Koop sits alongside house master Dennis Ferrer, yet neither of them define the sound. Instead Reinboth provides a spectrum of, in his opinion, music that is pushing the electronic jazz boundaries.

Opening with the highly strung Salome from Joash, we move into the hard stuff early with a Christian Prommer remix of Koop’s Drum Rhythm A, the percussion getting a good going from the Drumlesson master, the bass line really makes this track, big room sounds working overdrive for a devastating effect. The soft keys of Till The End from The Invisible Session (*Panoptikum* remix) are a nice respite from some of the dull beats that feature in places.

The weird synth pop Violet Violin from Wjotek Urbanski, with its skewed keys and spacey sweeps is in stark contrast to Dennis Ferrer’s heavy hitting Son Of Raw. Ferrer is well known for his big room house sound, here he is more refined, catchy keyboard riffs dance elegantly across a relentless drum track. The second half of this disc features some great party music such as Blackjoy’s Moustache (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) and intelligent pop number Movin from 400 Blows.

In the end it doesn’t particularly matter whether this is jazz influenced electronica or jazz waiting to come out of the electronica closet. What does matter is whether it moves you or not, unfortunately there seems to be too many generic fillers on here, and it is a matter of too little too late when we get to the latter stages of the disc.

In a word: Sterile.
