Superstar is an intimate insight into Lupe Fiasco’s internal conflict, between the ‘superstar’ rapper and the everyday man. It’s the first single off the upcoming Cool album, and a poignant statement about the state of hip hop. While 50 Cent and Kanye West battle for the ring-tone dollar, Lupe is injecting sharp lyricism when it is lacking most. No beef, no bling, no bullshit.
Constantly engaging in metaphor, lyrics are layered with imagery. Through the poetry, Lupe outlines his struggle without appearing hard done by or ungrateful. Put simply, Lupe is tempted to believe his own hype when cashing in from success. But in rare modesty, he says he can’t because “it’s too untrue”. Coming off the critical acclaim of his debut Food and Liquor, it would have been easy to follow those before him to self-conceited arrogance. But it seems he has done the opposite; now compelled to improve and progress as an artist. Selling out doesn’t appear an option.
Lupe’s wordplay is given worthy prominence with a simple drum beat loop and sparing use of piano. Chicago’s &Matthew Santos* is enlisted for the chorus, adding a contemplative contrast to Lupe’s obvious unease. Santos’ baritone vocals are reminiscent of Coldplay’s Chris Martin, especially when matched to classical piano. The bar has been set high for Lupe’s next release. Superstar is reason for optimism.
