Hustler is the latest release from Simian Mobile Disco, the London-based electro duo responsible for the dancefloor hit It’s the Beat and artist album entitled Attack Decay Sustain Release. This release will definitely hit the spot with electro-heads, with different flavoured remixes from Armand Van Helden, Kevin Saunderson and Shackleton.
Edgy, minimal and techy are the words that best describe this track. The club remix will most likely be the version that ends up on this season’s mix CDs, and getting the most airtime in clubs, although the AVH mix has a lot to recommend it as well. It ramps up slowly, starting with a few minimal beats and blips and a slightly creepy spoken androgynous vocal sample. About halfway through, the track starts on a steady upward trajectory to a big-room crescendo, and definitely gets there toward the end of the tune when the beats and melody are at full noise. The liberal use of the filter and abundance of low-frequency squelchy noises give the whole tune a polished feel.
The Kevin Sanderson and Shackelton remixes are deeper than the club mix, but aficionados of deep house will find the mixes well-engineered and very engaging.
