“How many people out there love electronic music?” The opening sample of a MCs voice over a mad-for-it crowd cheer makes my mouth water. That is until General Midi drops a throbbing bassline and thumping beat down upon my senses and gives me goosebumps. Distinctive’s Y4K series have been a stand out release that breaks fans around the world slide and shuffle to at home and in the car for quite sometime. Coupled with the DJing capabilities of General Midi, it’s truly a marriage made in heaven.
General Midi, the label’s latest signing, has always managed to master a more ‘level crunching, dub flavoured and bass fuelled musical ride’ than his peers and it is this that has earned him his fast growing reputation as the source of a great night out when he’s at the controls and as “the producer’s producer”. Emerging from the backrooms of the Bristol Club scene his slick DJ ability and an ear for a great tune have given him regular appearances at breaks hotspots across the planet such as Fabric, Chew The Fat, Blow Pop, Sounds On Sundays (Sydney), and Two Tribes (Australia) just to name a few.
With tracks from Rennie Pilgrem, Elite Force, BMD, Dylan Rhymes and General Midi himself, it is a journey into sheer broken beat bliss. Tight mixing and GM’s fantastic track selection leaves you feeling amped and wanting more. Definitely one of the better breaks compilations I’ve had the pleasuring of listening to in a very long time.
“If you came to one of my gigs, this is what you would hear me play,” “Not tune for tune, but I’ve tried to recreate and capture the vibe of what’s pleasing the dance floor at the moment.” – GENERAL MIDI
Great news with rumours of a tour coming up!
