The much-anticipated debut single from Canberra trio The Aston Shuffle fails to live up to the hype. Instead, it goes well beyond what anyone could have imagined. A warm, round sound, a cheeky melody and a riff that is oh so addictive come together to make what is quite possibly, the most anticipated single of the past 12 months.

As soon as the track opens, it’s unmistakably Aston Shuffle. From the long, round kick drum, the short clap, and the infamous cowbell. The song then slowly builds on the bass line, adding more layers of madness and mayhem, then at the 1:30 mark, we have a brief moment of half time, hip hop madness, where the song slows to half its speed. And then we’re back again, with much the same, until reaching the main breakdown, where we hear the vocoded vocals, “for everyone”. This breakdown is surprisingly musical and deep, with multiple layers of harmony and melody.

This is and all well and good. This is a brilliant track, and sure to send dancefloors, as well as girls in clothes shops wild. That is the amazing appeal of this song, as it is an underground song, but with ‘clothes shop’ appeal. Very few instrumental songs manage to do that. But what I would like to talk about now is the B-Side, F.C.K.V.R.N. I heard on the grapevine that a certain Ministry of Sound Christmas Party, Hook N Sling asked the boys from the Shuffle if the tune was in fact, a song that they had made. The answer was a resounding yes. The reason for this question was the utter lunacy of the track. Its not a remix of For Everyone, yet samples it. It’s not 125bpm, but is definitely a dance song. And its not out of time, but its not exactly in time, sounding like it has too much swing on the drums. But in reality there is no swing. The song is incredibly random, and changes about three times during its course. From disco, to electro house to the Justice type ‘chainsaw electro’ sound.

For Everyone is then a great song, and I’m willing to bet it will be one the biggest tracks of the year. And it thoroughly deserves it. But the real winner for me on this release is F.C.K.V.R.N, just bcause its unlike anything I have ever heard, and is nothing like an Aston Shuffle tune. You go guys.
