Disappointingly, this has very little to do with MC5’s seminal pre-punk tune of 1969, and even less to do with the brilliant Rage Against The Machine cover version of 2000. What it is, is a very standard, by-the-numbers, directionless piece of electro fart, which is neither improved nor diminished by the addition of a breakbeat on the flip. Kick Out The Jams repeats mindlessly over the top, in the style of a 1990s MC, except without any of the soul or nostalgic value.
If this was a first release by a local producer, beginning to master Ableton or indeed Fruity Loops, one could warm to the effort; but given this is a labelled release by a world-renowned DJ… More is expected. If you liked Moguai’s remix of Tocadisco’s Freaks, with for me seemed to suck the soul from a Beastie Boys-eseque vocal in a mind numbingly dull appropriation, then you might enjoy this. Clearly there is an audience for this sort of endless, melody-less, bare tech. But DJs who stubbornly play this genre all night, do so at their own peril. Save your pennies for something more memorable.
