Jazzbox, also known as Per Ebdrup to his mother and Gauzz to the electro community, has been producing and remixing many tunes over the course of his career, with his remix of Camille Jones The Creeps being one of his most commercially successful tracks to date, but he is far from a one hit wonder as he has worked his magic on remixs for names such as Ida Corr, Ike and Tina Turner, The Steve Miller Band and Kenneth Bager. With this latest release Jazz Is The Grass I Cut, he has managed to combine the sound of jazz with his own non traditional style of music production to create one of the most unique and modern nu jazz albums of recent times. And it’s been fast gaining acclaim and air play the world over from big names and radio stations such as Buddah Bar in Paris, Global Ibiza FM and BBC’s Radio 1.
This album is what I have always envisioned the nu jazz sound to be like, with a superb combination of sequences, brilliant musicianship and creative production skills, Jazzbox has put together an artful and energetic release that has something different coming with each and every song and though there are only seven tracks featured on this album, every one is a gem. A prime example and a touch of pure gold is the tune Smiling, which features a clever improvisation of the old Louis Armstrong standard and a sample of the legend himself singing those classic lines. But apart from this one track, that is where the vocals end as the other six songs are pure instrumental bliss.
With some of jazz’s newest superstars such as Nikolaj Hess, Kasper Tranberg, Jacob Fishe and Hans Ulrik featured through out, you know your in for some top quality audio listening entertainment. Smooth and pulsating grooves combine with intricate improvisation and elements of electronica to create a musical journey which both stretches genres and blures boundries, from the swinging brass of Later Than I Thought to the soulful keys of _Eia _ through to the drum n’ bass style percussion of Spyes Underground, this amazing album manages to convey many moods and many styles, all with a solid back bone of pure jazz, and pure class.
Though certain jazz purists may not like this album as it strays over to many musical styles, i personally think that is what makes this album so very special as even after multiple listens i was still finding new and intriguing things to get into. In my opinion, I couldn’t think of a better example of what makes the nu-jazz sound such a great style in it’s own right, and with the creative use of changing tempos and sublime melodies, this album will be on repeat in my player for a long time to come.
Well worth your hard earned cash.
