Australia’s pop princess Kylie Minogue is back again with more super cool, super hot, pop music. A genre that I don’t usually indulge in, but for the likes of Kylie I can always make an exception. What makes Kylie stand out as an accomplished and cool pop artist is that she continuously develops her style and changes her image with every album she makes. The new single WOW showcases her fun style with catchy lyrics, and a melody that you can dance to. The single features five remixes that are tweaked and twisted by some of the best names in dance music.
David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous remix is the first on the single. He turns WOW into more of an electro house track that is definitely designed for a dance floor. While this remix does take a little too long to build up (beginning with only the beat, then adding a keyboard melody and vocals) once it gets going, you’ll find yourself tapping along with it. While indie/electro outfit CSS remix WOW in a way that gives the song a bit of an 80s disco feel. It has a more cruisy, laidback sound featuring more of the vocals and even the addition of a cow bell. This remix is good, definitely not great and certainly not my idea of dancing at a club. It sounds like the theme music from a cheesy Mario-esque video game. Kiddy’s party anyone? Somewhat different and disappointing compared to the usual indie sound of CSS.
Next is the MSTRKRFT remix, my favourite track on the single. They’ve reworked Kylie and have given the song their own tasty MSTRKRFT flavour, oozing with electro goodness and a killer stomp. This remix is fun, upbeat and dance worthy, resulting in a cross between their tracks Easy Love and Killer On The Dancefloor; topped with a layer of the sweet vocals “ooh-wah-ooh-wah-ah-o”. Very nice.
The Death Metal Disco Mix Scene version is, as its name suggests, a dirty rock mix with an electronic twist. It has a sultry sexy sound, which I rather like. It almost reminds me of the cool LCD Soundsystem tune Yeah, with its strong rhythm and continuous development throughout. Think saucy Kylie: fishnets, stilettos… need I say more? While the Radio remix of WOW is Kylie in her more original form, dispensing a disco-pop, bubblegum sound. This remix creates an uber-happy, uber-fun, uber-smiling time feeling. Think of teenagers, roller skates and creaming soda spiders. It’s very girly, poppy… Kylie.
Overall, a sound collection of remixes. If you like your sneaky taste of pop, then give this sweet one a try.
