Salmonella Dub seem to have been around for as long as I’ve been interested in electronic music, and a quick check on their website confirms that they’ve been making music since the early to mid 90s. What else I learned was that from a singles point of view, their releases appear to have been few and far between in recent years. So, was the wait worth it?
Well on first listen I was surprised at how ‘un-dub-like’ the music sounded. It certainly didn’t have a reggae feel to it and came across more like a laid back New Order, which in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. That is until I turned the CD off and tried to think about the music. I had absolutely no memory of the music whatsoever, which was quite disconcerting. So I listened to it again and again and again and waited for the song to work its way into my consciousness. Yet no sooner had I turned the off the stereo I completely forgot what I had been listening to. It’s as if a little man just kept hitting the erase button in my mind. For a reviewer, this is not a good thing. I hate to say it, but the music was just bland. Maybe it was me. Maybe I needed to come back to the music when I felt a little more cheerful, so I decided to wait until we had two weeks of rain and the temperature dropped by ten degrees. That’s always guaranteed to put a smile on my face.
So after a two week hiatus here I am again and on reflection the track has actually improved. I can now hum the tune and sing along with the words. This isn’t difficult because there’s only a few of them. But at least I remember them! The feeling that I’m listening to a very mellow, laid back New Order is still there, but I’m now getting a little more from the music. Not that much more, but a bit more.
Now I don’t want to be so negative because this is not bad music: I would rather listen to this than to any RnB or hip-hop. In fact, I’d choose this over 95 per cent of what is currently played on any commercial radio station. Possibly even 96 per cent, but there’s nothing outstanding about the music. It’s just a pleasant little song that will hopefully get some air play and spend time out there not offending anyone else and hopefully making a long standing band some money in the process. God alone knows. If you’re better than 96 per cent of what is getting played on the radio – you should be a millionaire!

I'm confused - is this a review of the single? If so, what else is on there?
