The Body Language mix series from Get Physical has been, well… rather successful since its inception a few years ago. In fact, that’s one hell of an understatement. With the likes of M.A.N.D.Y., DJ T and Jesse Rose compiling and mixing numbers, it’s not all that much of a surprise. Here we have the sixth installment, and the mantle is passed to Canadian electro-pop duo Junior Boys to show us their selection and mixing skills. For me, it was a surprisingly convincing effort – and one that just keeps on playing.
Formed in 1999, Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus have gained fame and success with signature melancholic dance tracks fused with soulful vocals. Here, they manage to combine all of their interests and influences. They kick things off slowly – but for me, perfectly – with Sorcerer and Supermayer. But the tempo is rising, and as a good compilation should, you can feel the mood (the drama even) rising. Hell, the Sorcerer offering Surfing at Midnight (Prins Thomas Miks) just screams anthem, and is a nice intro, and as the beats get fatter the vocals stay away, far from a bad thing with the beats and the pure music staying front and centre. Good times.
The boys funk things up a touch with A Studio and Life’s a Beach! (Todd Terje Beach House mix), one of many highlights of the album – and they keep it that way. With the first real infusion of vocals courtesy of Gui.tar’s Love Started To Shine – and thrown in next to Dark Chapter by Stereo Image and you have got some cracking tracks back to back to back. You Know What I Would Do from Matthew Dear is the epitome of what these guys have become famous for – soulful vocals, a touch of funk and a solid dance tune.
All up, it’s got a bit of everything, including Pushe with a touch of cheesy disco in their Don’t Take Your Love Away, before the boys throw in their own No Kinda Man (Body Language Exclusive Track) and honestly – it becomes obvious why they are becoming well known for their caper: almost eerie vocals, with a backdrop of relatively simple, yet heavily tinkered minimal tech. The kind of track that just wants you to sit back, listen, appreciate and enjoy. For mine, it was hard not to. All up, these boys have got themselves a new fan. Not sure when, or where it might happen, but if you’re into this sort of music and you get a chance to witness the boys live, take it with both hands.
