So Steve Mac and Paul Harris team up together. What can we expect exactly? Answer: a deep minimal tech stomper that forages through the landscapes carved out by two great producers. Toolroom Records wax lyrical about this latest offering but despite all the bells and whistles, this still nestles on the side of disappointing for me.
There is a lot going on here. Lots of different twists and turns, and I gave it my full attention because of the individuals involved. It is definitely progressive, taking us on a galactic journey of bold tech grooves. They use the limited phrase ‘You’ throughout the tune but it reminds me somewhat of a grown up Tubular Bells or something akin to that. Nothing wrong with that considering that album is such a classic, but I don’t think it will set the dance floor alight on the popular level.
It’s still definitely ingenious and something which both men should be eminently proud of, but perhaps they should spend less time layering clever sounds and more time developing melody and structure. All three mixes are different from each other, and are interesting to say the least. Would I put my hands in the air when I hear it at the club? Possibly not, for I would find it hard to recognise it such are the many different directions it takes. However all three will maintain an inexorable rise to deep tech heaven for some. Just not for me.
The original club mix and the Tom Novy remix have many more elements in them than the FPS remix which is the deepest and most minimal of the three. Like I have said, deep throbbing and thought provoking but for me, it misses the mark purely on a dance level.
