First up, a little about how this release is structured. Set across two discs, Sasha has produced neither a studio album, a mixed compilation, nor a live album. Rather, what the Welsh DJ has done is give us a collection of remixes of his own tracks Coma, Park it in the Shade, Who Killed Sparky? and Mongoose – each remixed by Slam, Audion, Radio Slave and The Field respectively. And that is just on disc one. Turn to disc two, and more surprises await you. The end result: quirky, strange, yet undeniably Sasha.
Crack open disc one, and you’ll find that each remixer actually gets two cracks at their designated track. Things start off with Coma (Slam Soma Coma Mix) and the Audion Deep Steeple Mix of Park it in the Shade – and honestly, they’re just a touch inhibited, and just a bit of a non-event, and it’s not until Who Killed Sparky? (Radio Slave’s Brooklyn Dub Mix) and Mongoose (The Field’s Floating Mix) that we get a taste of more of those uplifting, yet distinctly progressive sounds that would ordinarily dot the landscape of a Sasha set. Then, we enter into slightly more ‘club’ sounding mixes of the same songs – again from by the same quartet – and the Slam Paragraph Mix of Coma is a considerable improvement: bit more daring, even a touch dark – but still, there’s the unmistakable feeling of monotony throughout, although if it were thrown in the middle of a typical Sasha set – it would undoubtedly get a very different response. Unfortunately, the other three do little to buck that trend.
Turn to disc two, which I probably should have done first – and you have exclusive edits of the same four tracks, plus one additional goodie: more on that later. The edits are without doubt, fun to listen to, but seem more like a bit of an experiment than anything monumental. Surprisingly – or then again maybe not given his recent notable shift – there is notably lighter touch of prog, and perhaps even less theatrics than one would normally see peppered throughout a Sasha production. Despite the Spangled Rubdub mix of Coma being an awesome tune, as a release, so far all you have is a release that while possibly working well for a DJ, is still a touch tedious to listen to. Needless to say, I may have jumped the gun on that.
I’m not a surfer, nor do I claim to be. But apparently, in 2006 there was a surf film released titled New Emissions of Light and Sound. Cowabunga. But the better news is that the musical score was produced by none other than – yep, you guessed it – Sasha. And here it is. Featuring no less than about eight or nine of his tracks (no tracklisting made life a touch difficult) things kick off with Gothic Mood and the unmistakable sound of Sparky – providing that seamless Sasha mixing that many of us (yep, me) have grown to know and absolutely love. Coma also appears again, in its rightful place, smack bang in the middle of other like tracks, providing that irrefutable theatre and energy that is part and parcel of Sasha, and as good as one could expect from him. It provides for a tremendously solid ending to an overall uneven release, but one that leaves you will almost certainly that last monster ‘track’ on repeat.
