The Hungry Humans crew from Geelong rarely disappoint, although seemingly still find themselves slept on. The latest enjoyable listen from the camp is this debut EP from Class A, a female emcee with a big future.
I’m sure everyone is sick of reading about artists that are “quality as far as female emcees go” or worse still “femcee” because I know I’m sick of having to compare their works to only those with matching chromosomes. And here I’m making a stand: all female rappers should be judged solely as rappers, forget stereotypes and prejudices, as they need to be held up against the best at what they do. With all that in mind this debut EP from Class A is a really solid start to her career, on the back of her Class In Session mixtape which she already had some buzz on, but this linking with Parker Lewis on the beats has allowed her mic presence to elevate. She can get self reflective on tracks like Everything’s Changed and Where Do The Days Go, both featuring Thorts, or taking us a little deeper on Die Happy, before sliding across to the ode to public drunkenness that is Liquor. Sure it’s nothing overly new or revolutionary lyrically but it definitely draws you as a listener in and makes sure the name rings bells for years to come.
Beat wise Parker Lewis brings the boom bap sound, it’s a definite throwback to classic US beats but with enough freshness that you find yourself wanting repeated listens in the year 2008. It’s a big sound on pretty much all tracks, heavy with samples, not vocally but instrumentation grabs that suit A’s honest delivery while still shining on their own. On the cuts is DJ Bogues, providing the quality that rounds out the package. Lewis even holds it down on a couple of instrumental tracks, Triangle Park being the best of these. A really solid debut, Hungry Humans have done it again.
