MGMT - Electric Feel (Justice Remix)

MGMT have definitely sent sparks across the music scene this year with their catchy ‘psych meets synth-pop’ sound. Their new single, Electric Feel, is nothing short of that; with the album version oozing a nonchalant, dreamy melody sprinkled over that warming synth-pop pudding – proving oh so tasty!
This serving of the single features the remix work of French electro outfit Justice, who have added some punch to the track. It begins with a daggy early 90s style beginning – think New Kids On The Block – then launches into that usual Justice sound; meaty and heavy synths. Justice usually succeed in dabbling with electro delight, but in this case they’ve just added a gooey layer of cheese. The sound is like the auditory equivalent of a soggy sandwich. It’s edible, but not enjoyable. There are good elements of the single, like it’s dance-ability; but honestly, it doesn’t get my booty off the chair…
The remixing technique is nothing innovative and the sound is getting a little bit old. One has to wonder if this type of remix would have been more successful with another MGMT track, like Kids? At the end of the day, if it opens the band up to a new audience then it’s served its purpose. It’s just not that tasty.
