Quiet Village is Matt Edwards, otherwise known as Radioslave, and veteran crate digger Joel Martin. For the most part, this album is made up of samples from various sources, ranging from the Alan Parson Project to Sister Sledge. Silent Movie is comprised of singles from the much sought-after vinyl-only releases on their record label Whatever We Want, as well as some new material. They have also done remix work for artists as diverse as Damon Albarn’s animated pop stars Gorillaz to deep house pioneer Francois K.
Matt is in charge of the programming and arrangement while Joel hunts down samples, with both of them “winging it on the vertical keyboard when a bass-line or chord is required”. In some ways, Silent Movie seems like a sedate version of The Avalanches’ seminal Since I Left You. The album begins with Victoria’s Secret, a slow burner laced with a lush string section, crashing waves and crooning seagulls. The style of the album is set – a kitsch journey of both familiar and exotic sounds.
Pleasant electronic music is ever-present and forgettable. So what makes a ‘chill out’ album really stand out is its more raucous moments like Portishead’s Pedestal, DJ Shadow’s Number Song or the aforementioned Avalanches’ Frontier Psychiatrist. On Silent Movie, this track is definitely Circus Of Horror; a foot-stomping number fuelled by a propulsive bass guitar riff and sampled vocals from a forgotten R&B record. It makes me think of Clint Eastwood playing Harry Callahan in the ‘70s classic Dirty Harry. The track could easily fit in with Lalo Schifrin’s excellent soundtrack to that film.
Another memorable song on the album is Too High To Move, a soulful narrative “about that woman and her man”. It’s a perennial story of betrayal and redemption, accompanied by a choice sample of Giorgio Moroder’s Valley Of The Dolls. The rest of the songs play out like a lazy summer afternoon, from the subtle disco strut of Can’t Be Beat to the slow-mo psychedelic rock of Pillow Talk.
The pace of the album could be considered almost lethargic by some, however sometimes that is exactly what you need. Silent Movie is definitely a rewarding listen when the mood strikes.
