Parisian DJ/producer Yass is certainly no debutant. With a decade and a half in the business, it is astonishing that it is only with his latest batch of productions that he is finally gaining recognition on a global scale. Showcasing influences from Chicago and French house through to NY techno, Yass has been cheerfully accountable for deep house standards I Believe, He Reigns and last year’s I Go Deep.
Abiding with his penchant for everything that is pumping soulful and deep, My Only is a sexy percussive house number with a bluesy gospel chorus. Leslie O’Smith from He Reigns notoriety returns and supplies an emotionally tense vocal which harmonises magnificently over the solid bass and rising synth loop. The Deepa Dub is a great cut which undresses the extended vocal to give attention to the other ingredients in the composition, while the Peak Time edits (vocal & dub) draw on Yass’s funk and hip-hop education to create a soft skipping breakbeat designed to shake a dancefloor into life. The final Bonus Beats focuses purely on percussion and breaches unpredictably into a fantastic organic tribal drum session, which is particularly pleasing as it offers a splash of diversity to round off a very good release.
Capturing the essence of house music and its deep-rooted origins, Yass’s first track on Defected looks set to be yet another which will endure in the record boxes, CD wallets and hard drives of house DJ’s worldwide. Expect to hear much more of this Monsieur on Defected this year – and put money on most having a pronoun in the title. Bon appétit!
