Ministry of Sound, the world’s most famous superclub and dance music brand, has released their latest mix compilation album Anthems 1991 – 2008. As the title suggests, Anthems 1991-2008 is a triple-disc mix compilation album that catalogues a definitive history of the world’s most famous superclub. The album spans two decades of momentous musical moments, tracing back to the birth of Ministry of Sound in 1991 as the UK’s first ‘super club’, all the way through to the current day as dance music’s most successful conglomerate.
Disc One traces the infancy of MOS and to a lesser extent the beginning of dance music. Opening with Robin S’s Show Me Love, the mix traverses the underground rave days circa 1991 through to dance music becoming more popular and mainstream in the mid-‘90s. Highlights included the seminal Sandy B single Make The World Go Around ( Deep Dish Radio Edit), Josh Wink’s acid house classic Higher State of Consciousness and of course Jaydee’s progressive masterpiece, Plastic Dreams. While the mix is well programmed and seamlessly mixed, the music, on a whole, isn’t exactly my kettle of fish. House music certainly has come a long way from the creation of funky house with over-zealous amounts of piano and percussion.
Disc Two’s tracklisting immediately resonates stronger with me, with a who’s-who of dance music luminaries featured. Appropriately the mix opens with a selection from one of the defining dance music artists in the mid to late 1990s – Armand Van Helden’s timeless track You Don’t Know Me. Every track listed in this mix is an anthem in its very own right. The beginning stanzas are a trip down memory lane, with a historic representation of the popularity of house music in the late 1990s. Defining tracks include Black Legend’s You See The Trouble With Me, Kenny Dope’s The Bomb, Sneaker Pimps’ Spin Spin Sugar and Tim Deluxe’s Double 99 RIP Groove.
As the mix approaches midway, the journey moves into the explosion of trance in the late 1990s. This is, for me personally, the best part of the entire collection. Representing about the time I discovered (and fell in love with) trance and dance music in general, the mix features timeless trancers 3 Drives On a Vinyl – Greece 2000, Chicane – Saltwater and Delerium – Silence, through to monster anthems by Underworld ( Born Slippy ), Faithless ( God Is a DJ ) and Kernkraft 400 ( Zombie Nation ). The latter marked Ministry of Sound UK’s critically acclaimed progression into the professional music industry, with the label’s 1st number 1. The mix couldn’t have closed on a sweeter note, signing off with the immortal ATB single, 9pm (Till I Come).
Just like Disc Two, Disc Three presents anthem after anthem. There’s not one ‘filler’ track to be seen. It’s near impossible and down-right unfair to even highlight some of the selections on this particular disc. Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Roger Sanchez, Laurent Garnier, Eric Prydz, Fedde Le Grand, Benny Benassi, Tomcraft, Bob Sinclar; it’s near ridiculous the amount of artists they put onto just one disc.
Every genuine dance music fan should buy this mammoth compilation – not only for the quality of songs, but also for the giddy trip down memory lane.
