If you want to hear true Detroit techno, go back to the heart of this sound with none other than Derrick May. Also known as Mayday and Rhythim is Rhythim, Derrick is an electronic musician from Detroit, Michigan U.S.A. and is considered one of the leaders of Detroit techno.
First released in 1998, Innovator has long been one of the most sought-after and priceless releases ever. Thankfully now with this 2008 re-release, you no longer have to delve into the depths of eBay to find it. Considered one of the most complete collections of techno classics ever, this new edition is totally re-mastered and ready for reminiscing on old techno days, educating yourself on the roots of techno, or simply respecting the quality of these sounds. However, whichever way you look at it, Innovator exhibits nothing but pure quality production and futuristic machine music for the past, present and future.
Classic doesn’t even cover it – skimming down the tracklisting, you’ll see that it’s at times too good for words. Disc One features the eerie tones of Strings Of The Strings Of Life followed by Another Kaos Beyond Kaos. Tech beats kick in with Freestyle, A Rest/Beyond Kaos and then the well-known The Dance. Although you may feel a bit Spaced Out amongst the techno beats, the mood swings upwardly again with Daymares, It Is What It Is. May takes us back through Some More Spaced Out, keeping the futuristic Detroit techno pumping with Feel Surreal Ends The Feel Surreal, R-Theme, and Emanon Begins. If techno had a groove, Sinister would give you a taste of it and then we reach The End.
Disc Two is filled with yet more genius techno courtesy of Mr May, this time with a deeper bassline and a faster pace. It features the incredible Wiggin (Juan’s mix), the driving Phantom and Nude Photo, a track that is said to be the one that inspired people like A Guy Called Gerald, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills and Basic Channel. Oh, and who can forget, the absolute classic Strings Of Life – a track that fills me with uplifting memories of losing it on dancefloor in clubs and parties around the globe.
As someone who got into techno late in the piece and has been trying to make up time ever since, I listen to this and realise that I sure missed out in learning about this music back when I should have. This techno was so forward-thinking for its time, it’s unbelievable. Thanks to the likes of Derrick May and the others of the infamous ‘Belville Three’ ( Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins ), this sound was formed, nurtured and continues to grow today. Albums like this can never be forgotten. This exhaustive collection of all those rare and sought-after 12”-only releases from Derrick May will remind you that he truly was an ‘Innovator’.
