I have to confess that I’m slightly puzzled by this recent trend in urban/hiphop circles involving the wholesale ‘sampling’ of Daft Punk tracks – Kanye started it, Janet attempted to jump the train with somewhat embarrassing results, and now on the heels of his recent Wearing My Rolex single, former Roll Deep boss Wiley lines up to have a go on this latest single Summertime.
As with its predecessor, this latest track sees Wiley going to efforts to further shed his garage/grime roots, ushering in a fairly straightforward slice of melodic hiphop/electro that manages to mention all of his attendant Myspace/Facebook etc during its three and a bit minutes, without really jumping too far out of the box. As for the Daft Punk sampling, this is less a case of ‘borrowing’ One More Time and more of a mashup style affair, and indeed apart from a soul vocal breakdown during the chorus, Wiley pretty much relies on all the track’s original hooks, making this something of a lazy exercise. Salvation looms potentially in the form of a Crookers remix, which sadly I didn’t get to check out on my one track promo copy.
