Ever since I received my newsletter from Fingerlickin’ a few months ago with some juicy news (and a YouTube clip) which showed that the Stanton Warriors had worked their bouncy, booty shakin’ breaks over the lovely Shifting Gears by the Plump DJs, I was amped. Now we’ve got it included with the Plumps’ latest single, with an extended DJ friendly mix of the gorgeous sounding Rocket Soul and the afore mentioned wall-shaking remix from breaks big fellas Stanton Warriors.
Coming off a slew of other single releases (it’s a Plumpy thing to do, most of their previous albums have come with fantastic DJ friendly mixes of the most popular tracks) from their 4th album Headthrash. Kicking things off is Rocket Soul. A lovely, chunky, thumping breaks number. It’s got a glorious amount of energy that pulsates and does an extremely good job of accompanying the airy, powerful and bouncy sounding lead. The electro in this is subtle and works perfectly to round out the track.
When you think things are over after just one track. The Stanton’s arrive with an absolutely wicked retake on one of my personal highlights off Headthrash. It’s as though Shifting Gears was designed by the Plumps for the Stanton’s to remix in the first place, because this remix is well and truly top notch. Building up slowly and stomping the ground with a gritty and deep electro bass, the Stanton’s utilise the lyrics from the original perfectly and even throw out the slick little breakbeat from the original, glitching it up to oblivion before bursting out of the gates for the finale.
I honestly give you a definitive choice as to which track is better than the other. They are both edgy, extremely well produced and addictive listens. Just pick up the whole package!
