Kaz James has released his debut album If They Knew, an effort that features a number of high-profile guest appearances . Kaz James was originally one half of Melbourne based electro-pop act Bodyrockers who had the hit track I Like The Way You Move and resident DJ at Onelove in Melbourne alongside Dirty South and Grant Smillie.
Here he drops his solo album and the lead single Breathe which features Canadian rapper Stu Stone. Can’t Hold Back features Macy Gray and All Fall Down sees Kaz team with DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit. With such big-name collaborations on the album there are different genres that are traversed across the tracks, from hip hop to rock and pop. Tracks like Still Thinking feature trademark thickset grooves with melodic structure and vocals from Kaz James himself. This is a thoroughly produced album that, like wehat we’ve heard from Kaz in the past, is targeted towards the mainstream market.
There’s a fair share of anthemic pop songs here, seeing Kaz breeak away from the Bodyrockers, stepping out from behind the decks and taking the center stage. The album sees him as a singer, songwriter, performer and producer, which proves a talent for musical creativity. Although this album is not my cup of tea, he should be given credit for his musical diversity across the different tracks. Risks are taken, styles are mixed and there’s a variety of solid tracks here. If you like bodyrockers and are into a general mix of rock, pop and hip hop, If They Knew is an album that you should consider listening to.
