Dukes of Windsor - Minus

Following on from their EPs Foxtrot and The Others, Dukes of Windsor have released their album Minus. It’s a rather fitting name for an album that was recorded and produced in the coldest depths of Scandinavia in Sweden.

The album kicks off on a strong note with No Disguise, a promising indie-electro rock concoction. The ballad is filled with heavy guitar and strong vocals, and it has a predominant pop influenced melody. It’s a War is another strong track, with the simplistic chant of the lyrical hook accompanied by powerful beats. These two tracks are both winners on the album and give a great first impression…

Sadly, however, as the album progresses there’s an evident lack of ideas. The tracks start to feel flimsy and empty, as if they were made as fillers to get it to a full album. The sound is extremely polished, but so much so it loses the raw effect that an electro-indie band should carry. This could work in the Dukes of Windsor’s favour, as I imagine the mainstream scene will pick it up on the album in a flash, but there are elements that are lacking.

Australia is producing a lot of bands that you can pigeonhole into this sound, and there are a lot of albums being released that have a vaguely similar sound. This could be due to the fact that labels are becoming scared and skeptical in taking risks, with record companies finding copycats that mimic the sound of artists who are already a success. Minus in parts borders on mediocre. The album starts off on a strong note but it deteriorates.
