According to Familjen, his swedish single smash Huvudet I Sanden (translated as ‘Head In The Sand’) needed even more attention than it was already getting. So how about a remix album? But can you really call it an album when the remixes are of the same three songs?
On the positive, Huvudet I Sanden is a great song and one that certainly received plenty of airplay overseas. His tour through Australia via the Parklife festivals, has opened him up to a new market for the track.
But back to the album itself. As a spin off his earlier album Familjen’s Det Spurrar I Min Skalle (It’s Spinning In My Head), this remix album will be sure to please his Swedish fans. After the release of the original album, plenty of DJs, producers and vocalists expressed interest in adding their own flavour to his music. The first mix, by Copenhagen DJ and producer Kasper Bjorke (recently caught working with the Ting Tings) is a slow down of the original track. Not my favourite mix on the album. One track features Adam Tensta, who provides hip hop vocals over the top. Definitely worthy of being a club hit.
The whole album feels very early 90’s but not in an accidental way. Although not too clear to me, Flamiljen’s sound has been paralleled to Stone Roses, Underworld and Happy Mondays. The Perfume Uniform Remix does have elements of early electronica but like most of the remixes does not do much to disguise the original version.
My favourite of the bunch, Boeoes Kaelstigen’s Tri Tub Remix, is like a mellow trance track that could have made it into the European clubs. Tor and Leo (the duo that is Boeoes Kaelstigen) bring their love for ‘futuristic machines that go beep’ into this mix. Its fun but not overly complicated.
The Kid in the Air Remix is a lively and excitable way to conclude this collection. I can safely say that hearing the same song remixed about six times does it little justice. Overall, not an album I would jump to play too often.
