The Dutch connection represents strong on this latest twelve from the 3024 label as 2562 gives Martyn’s Vancouver a reworking, with LA’s Flying Lotus on the flip. 3024 has been building a reputation on quality and attention to detail, and this release is no different. In-house illustrator Erosie makes light of the numerically obsessed connection with a visual remix of the original sleeve to encase the audio reworkings. A nice touch from a label which clearly values the difference such niceties go towards creating a treasured package for vinyl romantics to collect.
Impressively, the A-side sees 3024 reel in the vaunted remix talents of the Flying Lotus who offers his characteristically wigged out flavour to Martyn’s Natural Selection. In contrast to the unquantised beatplay on which he has built his name, FlyLo propels his Cleanse Mix with a tight percussive flavour that works a treat. FlyLo’s first foray into 140bpm is a triumphant melding of his distinctive style with a dubstep format.
2562 handles the remix duties on the B-side, lending his capable touch to Martyn’s Vancouver – a long overdue collaboration between this prolific Dutch duo. While the original was indeed a touch deeper than most dubstep fare, the Puur Natuur remix gives the original a luscious rerub, plunging things further below again. Dave Huisman’s trademark polyrhythmic shuffle skips and twitches as dollops of sub-aquatic melody sweep in and out of frame, while snippets of vocal from the original provide a neat tie to the source material. The result is on par with 2562’s very finest work and will be snapped up by dubsteppers with a taste for crafted beats.
Big with Boomkat, Bristol and Berlin – and rightfully so. A complete package from a label that continues to impress with each successive release.
