If you’re a fan of breakbeat or even electronic dance music in general and you haven’t heard of NAPT, then you must have been living under one damn huge rock because this duo have been creating some down and out club stompers since their arrival on the scene. With names like MJ Cole, The Freestylers, Ills, Klaus Hill and Reid Speed on their remix resume, they seem to be going from strength to strength in their effort to spread the ‘N-Funk’ gospel to the world.
Since receiving the ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ award in 2006 at the coveted ‘Breakspoll Awards’, as well as walking away with a nomination for best breakthrough producers, NAPT can seemingly do no wrong as this year they where again nominated at Breakspoll, this time for best overall producer and for their song Gotta Have More Cowbell from their N-Funk Part 1 EP. That release was the #1 breaks download on Beatport for five weeks straight, and their remix of Slyde’s Frequency holding the #1 spot of all Beatport tunes, they can’t seem to take a step wrong. In my humble opinion, NAPT have become synonymous with where breaks are heading, and with praise coming from some of the biggest names in the scene from Plump DJs to Stanton Warriors to A-Skillz, it would appear we could be listening to the next big thing.
They have just released a new two track EP titled (funnily enough) N-Funk Part 2 and they’ve again created genre mashing gold as the first tune Work This Out demonstrates, with the melody coming straight from the classic 90s house vein. The beat on the other hand is pure, unadulterated breakbeat and it keeps the tune hammering along to a multilayered bass line that’s sure to get the club windows vibrating. Following this is the utterly infectious tune Fortune which builds, builds and builds some more as its jackin’ tech inspired phatness never lets up, except for the perfectly positioned breakdowns that incorporate equal parts percussion and breakbeat, mixed with the synth line that burrows into your brain and won’t let go.
With so many great releases in their back catalogue, it would be easy to think that NAPT would let up but as N-Funk Part 2 proves, these guys are well deserved heavyweights of the breaks community and can stand proudly shoulder to shoulder as part of breakbeat’s true elite. Definitely check this one out.
