After two successful EPs, the third Future Sound of Cambridge release is the first long player in the series, and the first CD release to boot. Fans hoping to relive the golden age of the NHS will be left wanting, but there’s a lot of enjoyable beats to be heard in between some flatter moments.
We start with the melody-driven Balaclava from Nu:Tone and things look promising, and then Commix steps up with the boppy, percussive Coffee. This second track is a good example of one of the shortcomings of this CD release: while a lot of the tracks make for good DJ tools, the loopiness of some of them on an unmixed album does get a little tired. It also highlights one of the shortcomings of the album’s arrangement, which alternates the artists as opposed to placing complimentary tracks next to each other. Commix’s production is dubby and stripped back, and so the downshift every couple of tracks is a bit jarring.
By high contrast (I kill me), the Logistics sound is pure Hospital. Cosmonaut brings the vibe back up, and later on, Intervention is the pick of the album. Uplifting and energetic, it’s so much like London Elektricity you can almost see Tony Colman cooing like a proud father.
Nu:Tone and Logistics collaborate on the final track Hammerhead, which is a more driving effort. On the whole though, the album feels a bit flat, and is neither blissful and powerful like the best of Hospital liquid, nor driving and powerful like a more pumping rinse out. Some highlights, but not the best yet from the NHS.
