Much fuss is made about the proliferation of DJs ditching decks for laptops, some insinuating that it’s the death of a skill, that letting software synchronize tracks is borderline diabolical. Whilst the luddites out there moan and gnash their teeth in a self-imposed state of mourning, those DJs that choose to take the plunge continue to push that old envelope further and further. Steve Bug is one of those DJs who – in the studio at least – is quite at home using the best of digital technology to service greater flow in his DJ sets.
Let’s face it, there are that many compilations on the market that if Bug did little more than sling a few records together, his sales figures would be pretty dismal. Enter _Bugnology 3 _, which like it’s predecessor it’s been compiled using Ableton Live (darling) for a sleek mix up of house music goodness.
21 tracks are layered to kingdom come over the duration of Bugnology 3 in particularly artful fashion, but there is a distinct lack of energy to it. Fans of this tech house style, with it’s deeper groove and rhythmic textures, will jump on it like a two dollar hooker but others will find it’s obsessive focus on hypnotic grooves boring. The tracks featured on Bugnology 3 are of particularly high quality and have certainly moved floors no end since their release, likewise they do benefit from being so extensively edited for the purposes of this compilation but it really is a case which screams “too much of a good thing!”
Tigerskin’s fantastic Peter’s Secret Weapon, the Schatrax remix of Daso & Pawas’ Det, Matthias Meyer’s Tout Va Bien and Santiago Salazar’s Materia Obscura are definite highlights.
