A top dollar mix at a bargain price, hard to argue with that assessment, thank you to the marketing blurb, but there’s certainly more to it than that. Danny Byrd is a bit off the DnB map. Hardly a big name, he’s still got a rep of note and the Hospital allegiance always adds a large slice of kudos, as does the fact that he’s quietly been about for a decade now and his long time coming and mostly worth the wait Supersized definitely rates some attention.
The staple of the Hospital sounds are here, euphoric and uplifting, jazzy, accessible and dance-friendly with more treble than bass. London Elektricity pops up with four of the tunes and the stable of pedigrees all get a look in with Total Science providing the eerie and atmospheric Flip Flop and High Contrast’s soulful, housey Tutti Frutti giving you a good idea of the quality and style on offer. In addition to some of the best of 2008 there’s also five brand new and unreleased tracks of which my runaway favourites have to be Cyantific’s deadpan weirdness track Space Zombies which doesn’t really even pretend to be DnB but is a fun track anyhow, especially as it gets ramped up in to the second drop, slowing down again and again until finally attaining some drums and being mixed effortlessly with Mistabishi’s Heavens Sake.
Also worthy of note has to be another of Mistabishi’s new tracks Printer Jam which really does use printer noise create a corporate-industrial sound (I never thought I’d coin that phrase!) which shouldn’t work but really bizarrely does. With his debut LP due out later this month it’s surely worth keeping an eye out for this guy’s development.
Throughout the mixing is tight and simple, letting the tunes do the work and not trying to over complicate things. That said, a little bit of mixology wouldn’t have gone amiss here as you’d imagine from the one label, there’s a certain homogenous quality that’s not necessarily desirable. But with dub step and breaks making their way in to the mix, the sounds are diverse and offer a good vista of the Hospital output. For sure, it’s nice to hear innovation in a DnB mix and a bit of Commix at the end is a welcome treat.
Good value, good quality, interesting, diverse, inviting, you’d be hard pressed to go wrong purchasing this CD, a wrap of 2008 and a big nod as to what’s to come for 2009.
