Johnson & Jonson is the new project from MCs Blu and Mainframe. You may remember Blu from his other recent projects such as C.R.A.C and his collab with Exile, Below The Heavens’ or you possibly caught him supporting J-Live and Lyrics Born towards the end of last year. Unfortunately I missed his set and after hearing this album I’m regretting showing up late that night.
Johnson & Jonson is a solid album from start to finish. It has some faster harder tracks such as the first joint J and J, mixed with some extremely soulful and laid back hooks on others like The Only Way. Basically there is something about this record that should appeal to most hip hop fans. I remember hearing track 3 Half A’ Knot on Triple J a couple of months back while in the car, getting to my destination just after the song had started and remaining in the car until it and the following track had finished just to find out who it was, I liked the song so much. But it’s always a great thing on any album when you find out the single you brought it for is not actually one of the best tracks on the record.
There are quite a few standouts here, but I will give special mention to Bout It, Bout It. The smooth flow through this track over a slow string based loop works extremely well. Spell Check is also worth a mention, slightly heavier lyrically than the previous track it creates a good contrast between the two yet seems to flow very well into each other when listening to the whole album.
The press for this record states that if you’re a fan of Danger Mouse and Jemini, Quasimoto or People Under The Stairs that this is the record for you. I couldn’t agree with this statement more. If you do like any of those artists you will definitely enjoy it. There’s something on this record for everyone so I highly recommend all of you giving it a spin or ten.
