Fabric has the most consistent and solid out put of any compilation series focussed on underground house and techno. Whilst some instalments have been a little less adventurous than others everyone of them seems to have had it’s fans for one reason or another so it’s a good thing that Fabric have branched out and drafted a perhaps less well known artist in Omar S for Fabric 45.
Fabric 45 is kindred to Ricardo Villalobos’ earlier effort in that it features tracks solely from Omar-S and his until recently highly unattainable FXHE label (recently set for digital distribution through Beatport). This move earned Ricardo a few puzzled replies the first time around and this is no exception. However, it shouldn’t be viewed as some trite way to boost exposure even though that’s the name of the game. In this instance Fabric have brought to light some less often heard music from an interesting and emerging artist born of the world’s most critical techno town. The aesthetic of the maiden Omar S Fabric effort is wholly in keeping with his DIY image and approach to making music which he often recounts as being as much about expediency as creativity. Sonically it’s rough and ready with a little bit of vintage appeal despite most of the featured tracks being reasonably recent. This is of course because he’s a hardware man but we won’t go into excess detail there.
Overall, though the mixing is at best a little vanilla in some parts with some strange volume fluctations and unadventurous choices of technique, Fabric 45 is as endearing as it is engaging due to Omar’s individuality and audaciousness. Folks who love their dance music deep and of course a little Detroit will love it. Check ‘Strider’s World’, ‘U’, ‘1 out of 853 Beats’, ‘Psychotic Photosynthesis’ and ‘Blade Runner’ for some serious quality.
