This release leads with an update of Toastyboy’s evergreen Knowledge, given the re-rub with 2009 studio technology. Untold retains all of the key samples from the original, making for a subtle update of a classic, rather than a radical reimagining. The instantly identifiable samples of the original make their presence felt early, and frequently, meaning this one is unlikely to creep up on anyone with the pleasant “penny-drop” moment that an imaginative remix usually evokes. Whether this remix is sufficiently different from it’s source to warrant its release is a matter for contention. This version stays true to the template of Toasty’s classic, merging punishing drums with female vocal samples from what sounds like a lost rave classic. In a lot of respects, Untold’s remix feels more akin to an alternate take than a true remix, sitting only a few shades away from pointless V.I.P. revisionism.
The flip houses a reissue of Loefah’s crushing deconstruction of Search and Destroy’s Candyfloss. In contrast to the A-side, Loefah’s reworking completely transforms the slinky syncopated swing of S+D’s original into the kind of molten bass sludge that the DMZ sub-bass master has become renowned for. Weighted for maximum chest vibrations, Loefah’s touch has undoubtedly claimed many an unsuspecting sub-woofer in it’s day.
Sadly, this release just might have fans of both original tunes pausing before passing up this twelve for another which offers two sides of unheard music. Hot Flush fan-boys will no doubt already have Toasty’s original holding a vaunted spot in their crates, with the first issue of Loefah’s remix only sitting a few inches behind it – making this release’s essentiality questionable. With the slew of fresh material emerging from the Hot Flush stables from the likes of Pangaea, Scuba and Untold himself, one can only be perplexed as to the emphasis on reissuing material that is still widely available. Strictly for ardent completists and the new school heads who may not have caught either release the first time round.
