Steve Bug’s Poker Flat label requires little introduction. Though the most obvious and successful artist to release on the label in recent years has been Denmark’s Trentemoller, Bug has amassed a rogue’s gallery of creative and forward thinking artists to the label over a duration of ten years and All In! 10 Years Of Poker Flat is a fantastic celebration of that.

Set for release in a range of formats, the compilation in it’s standard double CD form features a disc titled ‘The Exclusive Tracks’ and the second titled ‘The Current Tracks’. This does make the second disc a rather less appetising prospect than the first, despite it fairly serving as a time capsule of sorts. However, with tracks like Argy & Sydenham’s In The Mist, Simon Flower’s Phosphenes and DJ T’s After Dark the disc is text book Poker Flat dancefloor destruction, perhaps even more so than the first disc.

Perhaps it’s the familiarity of much on the second disc which makes it more appealing, but for all the inherent charm of having new material to sink teeth into, much of what the first disc serves up feels a little limp wristed and a little too formulaic for a statement on the future direction of a celebrated dance music label. Efforts from Patrick Chardronnet (with Float), Sycophant Slags AKA Mr C and Adultnapper (with Telling), Guido Schneider and Florian Schirmacher (with Nadel Und Zwirn), John Tejada and Arian Leviste (with M Track 5) do save it from blandness though.

It’s worth noting that the third of the discs from the limited edition box set (which comes with a poker deck and sticker) is actually home to some of the best tracks – all classic label material. Goes to show that looking back is rarely a bad thing.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
