Ah, Little Boots. What a cute, cute name. And it’s a name that has been mentioned quite frequently lately by the likes of Mixmag, DJMag, BBC, MTV and various other three letter entities. The UK poppet has been gaining a reputation as the next big thing in ‘electro pop’ (note the use of apostrophes, we’ll be coming back to this term later) lately, with the release of her new album Hands.
Recent reviews have drawn comparisons to the likes of Kylie, Lady Gaga and Robyn, but for your own sanity I will resist the urge to label her a ‘pocket-rocket’, just because she’s slightly under average height. Though I don’t really see the comparisons, she does make good, fun pop music. It’s synth heavy and has some great electro beats, but it is here I will come back to the term ‘electro pop’. While personally I take issue with the term electro being thrown around willy-nilly to describe any music that involves a synth, Little Boots is most definitely pop with a hint of the afore mentioned genre.
Hands is a good, fun, somewhat cheesy pop album – easy to listen to and not too challenging – which is not always a bad thing, as we all need our indulgences. New in Town is a definite highlight, already getting regular airplay on stations around Australia. If you think you haven’t heard it yet, think carefully: it may just be that song that’s been stuck in your head the past two weeks. Remedy is looking like it will also soon be doing the rounds of radio station playlists too, but Tune Into My Heart is about thiiiiis close to being mistaken for a track from a Eurovision contestant.
While I can see the merit of Hands, is it worthy of the recent rave reviews? I don’t really think so. But then again, don’t listen to me – don’t tell anyone (for fear of ruining my chances of a career in A&R), but when Britney first hit the airwaves, I thought she’d never make it big. Shhhh… Best decide for yourselves, methinks.
