Perhaps forever destined to live in the shadow of Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts and the mighty Presets, it’s worth remembering that Van She are talented boys in their own right. Their remix of Klaxons’ Gravity’s Rainbow is a certified banger, as is the Van She Tech remix of Utah Saints’ Something Good.

Their long-awaited debut album, V, whilst technically sound, did little to capture the imagination. It’s listenable fare, with the snappy Strangers and sweet Kelly being standouts, but the rest of it is all a bit same-same.

Enter Ze Vemixes, perhaps Modular’s attempt at remarketing Van She in time for this European summer. It confirms my suspicion that remixes are what Van She do best. Changes is catchy, surf-summery pop, and Talkin’ recalls the electro-robotic brilliance of Gravity’s Rainbow, without ever approaching such great heights. Strangers hints at Depeche Mode, and It Could be the Same is super-fun, almost girly, full of hand claps, cosmic synths and all things bright and breezy.

Sexual City is a bass-heavy, Boys Noize-y club cruncher, whilst Cat & the Eye is tranquilised, slo mo techno, more trippy than zippy. Techno Music isn’t as promising as the title suggests, despite a solid buildup, and Virgin Suicide wouldn’t be out of place in the Sofia Coppola film – think daisy chains, sepia tones and a smiling Kirsten Dunst.

Ze Vemixes is an inoffensive yet unremarkable release. For fans only.
