With summer just around the corner, French house DJ David Guetta cleverly disguises a genius marketing manoeuvre with the release of his third artist album One Love. Welcome to masses David, welcome…
And what more could you expect from an album that opens with the single When Love Takes Over, a track that has topped charts in the UK, all over Europe and managed a #3 spot in Australia. Not only did Guetta compose and write the song (with the help of Coldplay’s single Clocks of course), he managed to enlist Kelly Rowland to turn a seemingly cool, calm song into a powerful hit.
It’s definitely an album heavily packed with R&B A-listers and, in my best American accent, “if that’s the flavor of your kool aid,” then you’re guaranteed an album that will satisfy. We’re talking about artists such as Akon, Kid Cudi, Ne-Yo, will.i.am and apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas.
Julie McKnight, featuring along with Sebastian Ingrosso and Dirty South, is another big voice perfectly suited for the very anthem potential sound that is How Soon Is Now. Meanwhile, I Got A Feeling, another all too familiar track by the Black Eyed Peas becomes Guettas FMIF Remix Edit and pays tribute to their The E.N.D. album, which Guetta again assisted with in the writing and production department.
The rest of the tracks are just as airplay friendly. Akon appears just to show his respect for beautiful women, perhaps better known under the title Sexy B*tch; the epitome of the laid back clubber track. Then we also have Memories with Kid Cudi, the more tranced out Sound Of Letting Go with frequent collaborator Chris Willis, One Love with the slightly more ethereal Estelle and the closer If We Ever, all examples of how incredibly smash-hit oriented this album is.
I hear you asking how this particular album slots into the inthemix world? I like to think that inthemix is host to an intelligent, thought provoking and slightly idiosyncratic audience of dance music lovers. If that is you, you might find this album a little too mainstream. But from a marketing perspective, this really is a smart move. Perhaps at times a little too safe, but definitely one that will shift loads of CDs to the general public. It doesn’t deny listeners fun and familiarity, guaranteed to generate a summer fresh festival vibe, and complimenting the “One Love” entity that is so well recognised in Australia. No, it’s not groundbreaking music; however, this is a global album, ready made for the pop and house-hungry global audience.
Oh, and I feel I have to warn you. You know all those songs that keep getting stuck in your head? Well, One Love pretty much contains all of them.
