After keenly anticipating the arrival of the Transients EP, my wait was finally over with the arrival of Crossfades. For those of you not already familiar with them, the Transients hail from Perth and are fronted by Robert Maszkowski and Bela Inkster, who started writing music together in 2006. Dropping by on a couple of the tracks for vocal duties is the delicately seductive sounds of Jasmine Yee who was previously of Perth indie band Halogen, and guest on Pendulum’s Hold Your Colour.

Opening the 5-track ep is One Day, which kicks in packing solid beats, roaring vocals from Robert Maszkowski and is filled with quick energetic keyboard lines that take you into the darker side of electro, exposing you to a beauty of a sensory world. Next off the rank we have Mischa which is a beautifully crafted track, and the first appearance on the EP to feature the vocal stylings of Jasmine Yee. This is one of those tracks that could easily become a commercial hit due to its sweet lyrical content and slick production, as well as earn the respect of EDM producers, as the call and response of the guy/girl vocals is nothing short of mesmerising.

Moving into our third delight, In The Sound features Robert’s subtle vocals which punch through the overlaid synth bleeps, taking the track into a somewhat nostalgia filled chorus. It’s a melodic techno number that sweeps towards a superb delayed finale, and doesn’t disappoint.

Rising through the EP’s strong tracks is Can’t Let You Be Lonely, and this is also the second time we are treated to Jasmine Yee’s vocals backed by tweaked sounds and melodies that take you on a journey of a sweet tainted reality. This now leaves us with the finale track on EP Echo, and I’d claim that all electronic fans are going to get lost in the groove of filtered drum breaks laced with synth lines that send subtle tingles through your body.

After a solid listen there is no wonder why The Transients have taken home a swag of industry awards and nominations throughout the last two years, and have been hitting the live scene running. The overall sound of this EP will leave you wanting more, and personally I cannot wait for the Transient’s next installment of well-produced electronica. Do yourself a favour and get your hands on another fine Australian production.
