Every time I see Stacey Pullen play here in Melbourne, I have to say, I’m never disappointed. He has his DJing down to a fine art, as he weaves Detroit techno and house music amongst other things such as soul to create a mix that doesn’t necessarily fit in with anything else. Detroit techno is truly his dominant sound however and is one that he seems to do so well. The latest offering from the label 2020 Vision is from none other than Stacey, following on from stellar mixes from label boss Ralph Lawson and quality DJ/producer Greg Wilson.

Pullen has long had a strong relationship with 2020 so it was no surprise that he was chosen to do their latest compilation. This mix focuses on the now and beyond with a set that is predominantly fresh, upfront and exclusive tracks, proving that Pullen is not one to stand still and only reflect on the past. Featuring a collection of old and new tracks from the imprint, including Wulf N Bear (AKA label owner Ralph Lawson, Carl Finlow and Paul Huggett’s early project), as well as the more recent numbers from label regulars Mark Broom, Art of Tones, Moodymanc and also 2020Soundsystem’s Sliding Away, with Johnny D on the remix duties.

The exclusive track is that of Dutchman Julien Chaptel’s house remix of Simon Baker’s Out of My Head. This compilation encapsulates a pushing on, smooth mix of what I read somewhere to be “percolating house” (just love that!) that moves through to techy driving beats, opening my eyes not only to Pullen’s skills but also 2020 as a label. An enjoyable eye-opener.
