Lee Coombs’ Light & Dark album has finally been released and the man is currently touring around Australia to promote this fine piece of work. Now I’m not going to bother with introductions and cut straight to the chase.
When thinking about this album several words come to mind, the most prominent of which being ‘fat’. Seriously this is some dark, brooding kind of music that is specifically designed for one thing. Complete dance floor annihilation. Lee Coombs has taken that old 80s techno and transformed it into a unique fat wobbly sound that oozes liquid funk out of your speakers like melted cheese out of a late night burger.
The element that gives this album its fat dirty sound is of course the low end analogue synthesisers used heavily throughout the album. The tune Light & Dark being a prime example of this with its heavy synthesisers and a rolling bass line. I swear a couple of tunes could have easily made it to the sound track of Tron... the original one. If it had a good soundtrack, and was more brutal. This comes as no surprise as Italo Disco was inspired by films like Blade Runner and Midnight Express (not so crappy as far as 80s films go I’m informed). This influence is echoed throughout the album.
The album tappers off a bit at the end finishing off with a more down tempo song in Not A Game which I didn’t quite enjoy as much as the other songs. With all the dark at the beginning of the album, Lee Coombs gave me a bit more of an appetite for grinding funk than music inspired by Leftfield.
The album is finished off with Blues I’m Singing – a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s song Rescue. It was a nice nod to his influences but it didn’t win me over straight away. This track is more of a slow burner, but is just a delicious as the greasy treats on offer at the start of Lee Coomb’s album it just needs time to digest.
For me the best song on this album is Right Now feat Uberzone. My reasoning for this being that most of the music I listen to is played in my car on the way to work. And there is nothing I love to do more at 7am in the morning then abuse the crapola out of my sub woofer with big nasty tunes. This song is a large in every sense of the word. It’s like the XXL Burger of Light & Dark except twice as big, more addictive and the grooving it induces is surely better for your health then that greasy treat.
Light & Dark is probably more Dark then Light, but that’s the way I like it and I’m sure most Lee Coombs fans will agree with me. This album has some dance floor destroying tunes and is one not to be missed!
