Having worked briefly in the field of logistics, the name always conjures up the vision of a container ship guarded by heavily armed Filipinos, guns at the ready, scanning the horizon for pirates and ready to defend their cargo of frozen apples with their lives. As a DJ and producer, however, Logistics has been responsible for killer albums Now More Than Ever and Reality Checkpoint. He’s also established himself as a staple of Hospital records, and as a many adept at collaboration (including with his brother Nu:Tone, who surprisingly only appears once in this collection, kicking it all off with Hyper Hyper).
2009 saw Logistics release his track Jungle Music to much acclaim. It was even selected by iTunes as one of their ‘dance’ tracks of the year (generic labelling hardly covers it). So Logistics seems to be moving on to greater and greater things. Jungle Music appears here midway through the collection, dropping its heavy bass load like a thousand carpet bombs before a tight, effortless mix into Subwaves’ discordant, soul-filled Stars Get Down. Since their inception it’s fair to say that the Hospital label and its artists have expanded their scope, but their trademark sound persists on tracks like Electrosoul System’s Sunshine and MRSA’s Different. They show just how effective it can be when done well, fusing that terrifying liquid-funk vibe to quality production.
Danny Byrd’s Sweet Harmony is, admittedly, one of the most clichéd, trite tracks in this mix, but I have to say I still love it. I get a little buzz every time I hear that piano kick in, and possibly also a bit of a flashback to times spent to the dancefloor. And if it did make you yawn and want something newer, darker and fresher, you don’t have to wait long with Paint It Black by Sigma exploding out of the blocks like Usain Bolt. Logistics nails the mix and lets the tune play out to its full intensity. I’m going to use the word… Transcendent. Yep, that’s right.
Mistabishi’s insane track Greed is a horror-fantasy gothico-drum-n-bass number that’s held together by the blood of virgins. It morphs into another truly evil-inspired track, Archive by Total Science, which brings the pace down before kicking in to the unreleased Bare Religion by label founder London Elektricity. This is a fabulous mix, the sort of one that you feel driven to make other people listen to. It’s hard to imagine not liking it, even if you have all the tracks already. Dark, smooth and quirky. Funky, soulful and musical. It’s got it all.
