Anjunabeats Worldwide 02 is another compilation from the Above & Beyond stable which acts as a 12-month retrospective trance trip down memory lane. This follow-up album offers a comprehensive reaffirmation of melodic, vocal-laden heady treats over two discs, with the first again mixed by Super 8 & Tab, and the second by youngster Mat Zo.

Above & Beyond, no strangers to nurturing and supporting new talent, are largely unafraid to hand the decks over to the new wave of up and comers. Granted, while Finland’s Super 8 & Tab, aka Miika and Janne, aren’t so new to scene, they are one of Above & Beyond’s most consistent artists and you can hear why in their handling of disc one. Together they mix up a fine selection of tracks, including two of their own originals, plus productions and remixes from the likes of Bent, Velvetine, MaRLo feat. eM, Mike Koglin, Lange, Ronski Speed, Thomas Datt, Sunny Lax and Dan Stone.

Highlights for me are their own pieces; the intoxicatingly tuneful Black Is the New Yellow featuring Anton Sonin, and the eloquently pounding yet polished Adam Nickey remix of Irufushi. Jer Martin’s Ten Minutes to Midnight (original club mix) and 7 Skies’ Caffeine also wonderfully washes down the atmospheric ambience synonymous with the Above & Beyond sound.

20-year-old Londoner Mat Zo mixes disc two, and trust me, he mixes with a maturity beyond his years. Championed by the likes of Mixmag and DJ Mag as well as Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, he blends with an eclecticism that truly offers youthful difference. Zo’s productions veer between epic drum ‘n bass and finely tuned melodic trance, and in keeping with his exemplary production output for Anjunabeats, his mix on CD Two is a dextrous showcase of his talents. Alongside his own work, disc two features tracks by the likes of Dinka, Arnej, Boom Jinx & Andrew Bayer, Andy Duguid and Richard Durand.

Anjunabeats Worldwide 02 is pure blue blood Above & Beyond. The two discs are an easily digestible duo, with the second being the slightly more inventive and fresh. If you are already an Above & Beyond fan, you will welcome this with the open arms; akin to bumping into a long lost friend on the dancefloor. If you are not, then I will emphatically say you never will be.

Anjunabeats Worldwide 02 is out now on Anjunabeats.
