Sometimes, I’ll give an album a good review. And then I’ll promptly file it away in the ‘albums I’ll never listen to again pile’. Not cause of sneakiness or laziness, but sometimes you can see its quality even though it’s not to your personal taste. But it does irk me sometimes. Which is why it’s nice that get to both give Dirty Vegas’ Electric Love a good review, and put it on high rotation.
Following 2001’s classic Days Go By, I’d heard nothing of Dirty Vegas other than the surprise appearance of a new track Tonight in Faithless’ 2010 Essential Mix and Anjunabeats Vol 7. I say surprise because its trancey sound seemed so far removed from their last, more acoustic hit. I’ll get back to the trance in a sec. The opening tracks like Little White Doves, Changes & Emma have a sound I found reminiscent of Groove Armada’s Black Light release, with a poppy live band sound and just a nod to electronica.
The tone changes though, when the epic tranciness of Pressure hits smack in the middle of the album [listen below]. Such. A Good. Track. Its ranking on my iTunes most-played list is ascending by the day, and my only frustration is the fact that I haven’t been able to get my mitts on an extended mix yet. I don’t mean to blather on (but I will) but it’s one of the best trance tracks I’ve heard in a while – and from a non-trance act, no less.
I love the clubbier sound of the second half of the album, but it makes me wonder what direction the guys intended to take the album as a whole, as there’s quite a jarring distinction between the live band-esque tracks and the serious electronica vibe of others. Whatever the thought process, I’m hoping to hear more of Dirty Vegas soon (remixes or new material) and am stoked to have added them to my prestigious ‘acts-I’m-desperate-to-see-in-the-very-near-future’ list.
Electric Love is out now on Om Records through Central Station.
