Rennie Pilgrem rates as an undisputed legend amongst breakbeat aficionados. In addition to cutting some mighty fine mixes on the dancefloor he’s also a talented musician, producer and remixer of some note. Having been fortunate enough to catch the man in action a few times I was very excited to hear that a selection of the music he has produced over the past decade was due for imminent release.

Enter “Selected Werks”. What can I say? I’ve picked up the CD today and I’m already excited after just a few trips through the collection. Pilgrem manages to take breaks to a higher plane. Fans will be familiar with tracks such as “A Place Called Acid”- with its dirty twisted breaks and “Paranoia”- seven minutes of brooding, tough breaks. The latter was a huge hit with fans of irregular beats last year.

The release also contains Pilgrem classics such as his collaboration with Uberzone, “Black Widow” funky acidic breaks and “Somewhere” – smooth vocals and synthetic sounds sliding across edgy breaks – nice indeed. With the ability to produce music like this it’s no surprise that Pilgrem was voted best breaks mixer by DJ Magazine last year. The man knows his beats and I luuuurve this CD!
