(Tru Thoughts/Creative Vibes)
It’s easy to just label something as breakbeat and be done with it. However, like good music usually is, to describe it solely by its rhythmic pattern is just the tip of the iceberg. Quantic is 22 year old English producer Will Holland and Apricot Morning is his second album release. Not that age should mean anything but here Holland, as Quantic, demonstrates a wide range of influences which are all incorporated into the sounds being produced on this album. With everything from jazz to afrobeat shining through it is an eclectic mix of tunes retaining one essential quality, an amazing sense of funkiness.
With a range of high profile fans including Mr Scruff, Richard Dorfmeister and Groove Armada all wanting something of Quantic he seems to be on to a good thing. And to the most part he is with variety definitely being the spice to this albums life. If this bedroom producer proves anything it is that above all else the key to good music is fresh ideas, a little imagination and a lot of hard work. And hard working he is with albums from two of his other projects due out in coming months. Apriciot Morning is proof that the newest sounds are not necessarily the result of the most expensive equipment setups.
Opening with the title track Apricot Morning it immediately starts off on an upbeat note. The track combines soundscape type drifting feelings with a down and out funky breakbeat. Music to wake up to on the right side of the bed. Upbeat but not overbearing. Brand New Watsui features a jazz style double bass playing along side a whispy percussive beat whilst Search the Heavens once again treads a funky jazz laden path, this time featuring the beautiful soft vocals of Alice Russell.
Primate Boogaloo sees Holland’s live outfit, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, combining with UK outfit Aspects to deliver a funky and percussive hip hop number, perhaps one of the highlights on offer. Sweet Calling brings back Alice Russell but this time for a more upbeat affair, her voice losing none of its soulful qualities. The closing Off the Beaten Track is a mad percussive jam of sounds full of funky feelings and good times.
Quantic is for those after some beats which are not heavy and necessarily pounding. Instead expect to be whisped along by unrelenting funkiness with a worldy range of influences. Fans of percussive rhythms that dance around in your head and jazzy melodies that will not be disappointed. At only 22 years old Quantic is a name to keep an eye on in the future.
